League of Legends - A Review

A new review of League of Legends, necessary to investigate aspects of online gaming rush of recent years

League of Legends has been talked about a lot in the last two years, but the first version of the game, also released on retail shelves, dates back to 2009. Since then, the production of Riot street has come, quickly becoming the online game shared most of the planet, to the point where it represents perhaps
one of the reasons why Valve has also decided to bring back to life the original Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients. League of Legends and DOTA 2 share in fact, in large part, their origins, since both have been developed with the valuable contribution of the modder responsible for the original formula of the game. Today, with DOTA 2 is now officially released, the "numbers" between the two software house is very difficult to interpret, given that Valve always tends to be rather protective of his statistics. In any case, despite the post-release of DOTA 2 has seen excellent growth, at the time the records are in the hands of Riot, which can still boast more than thirty million unique players a month and a peak of users connected simultaneously by more than five million. Retrace all the reasons for this success, analyzing also updates the last period.

PLAYER ONE HUNDRED SAMPLES

True heart of the experience offered by the League of Legends are the 115 samples available so far, a number constantly increasing. Riot is a constant work in progress, as through community feedback and analysis of the statistics of each patch contains frequent small and large adjustments to the abilities of the characters. It is joined by the occasional revamp, ie patches aimed at a single sample that completely revise the statistics and, occasionally, I also updated the look. The attention that Riot puts on the development of individual samples has increased over time, and a practical example is just as Lucian, the latest released the result of over a year of work on the design and balance. The progressive release of the samples, which can be purchased either for real money or with in-game currency, is one of the main thrusts initial progress of the player, even considered the possibility that Riot offers free overstating some with weekly rotation, so as to give a test before disbursement.

FROM A Defense of the Ancients LOL

League of Legends, just like DOTA 2, is a direct descendant of the original map Defense of the Ancients, created by some members of the community of Warcraft 3, and in fact maintains several fundamental characteristics. The main map, known as the Summoners Landa, is presented in the classic form three paths, with the opposing bases, and ten samples divided into two teams. All players begin each game at level one and can be up to 18, unlocking progressively four skills of attack, and purchasing items from the shop with the money accumulated by killing NPC opponents and other players. By balancing operated by Riot, most of the sessions of the League of Legends game takes place in a rather neat, especially if players are to participate with a certain amount of experience on his shoulders. Some twists never fails, but the low mana cost of attack skills, the rapid accumulation of gold and the limited size of the map leading to svolgimenti very structured, most of which follow a traditional progression in three movements. With the team initially divided on the trails, the control is passed to the advancement of the lines to the towers, and returning them to the team in order to launch the final attack. Another peculiarity of the gameplay of League of Legends is the great speed with which the champions moving on the map, instantly changing direction and unleashing physical and magical attacks in a fraction of a second, leading to clashes that not only see a great number of skills used at the same time but may also result in nothing done with mutual disengagement and escape (a rare event, for example, in the main competitor weblog Valve, where clashes often end with a delete). This is also due caster for spell, another peculiarity of the game, or two skills freely selected from a pool that has a total of 13. Among the most commonly used, in fact, there are those specifically dedicated to flee the fighting and gank one on one . The MOBA of recordA play a very important role in the mechanics of the gameplay, there are also runes and masteries. These work like the classic MMORPG skill trees (see World of Warcraft), with points that will unlock the increase in the level summoner. Runes are to be purchased (in this case, with in-game currency or real money), and they provide bonuses based on the characteristics of the individual samples (attack, defense, speed and base many others). Of course, a player willing to use more samples will have different configurations by Rune and Masteries, adding an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay. Overall, as demonstrated by the many sites full of statistics on the percentage of victories achieved by the individual samples, the overall balance of work done by Riot is remarkable. The MOBA recordQualora some of the samples would prove to be too effective, or assumed, in some of their aspects, the Draft mode and Ranked matches (which you can participate only after reaching the thirtieth level caster) allow you to "ban" the three samples per share before the start of the battle, adding to the balance operated by the software house an additional strategic aspect. As for the level of challenge offered, League of Legends actually proposes an initial learning curve less steep than its main competitor, due to a large number of factors, including the absence of the deny (what we explained in our driving in two parts), the ability to lower mana cost, the fastest movements, killings that do not subtract money from the victim, and so on. However, once past the early stages and reached a level of around 20 summoner, matchmaking begin to do its work, and discover how often other players with more experience and organization can give lessons in humility, confirming that the ability of the individual and the mechanics of team count for much more than any set of Runes.

BUT HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The microtransactions present in League of Legends have been handled in a very careful and, at times, quite aggressive, but this does not mean that the game falls under the category of so-called infamous "pay to win". As often happens with productions free to play, there are two separate currencies, Influence Points, which are earned for each match won (or lost, but in a much lesser extent) together with the experience, and Riot Points, which are purchased instead with real money. The objects in the in-game shop, ranging from skin modified for samples at various boost and gain experience, up to the Runes can be purchased with either one being with the other currency (with the exception of the boost that require real money). Of course, to get to level 30 summoner without spending a single euro will take some time, opening their wallets and spending an amount equal to the cost of a new game in the store, the operation will be much shorter, thanks to a couple of XP Boost well-placed (be careful though, because this will take you to the level cap making you gain influence points less than expected, then again forcing you to wait, or spend, to complete the Rune). In other words, the real money spent in the League of Legends can make leveling faster, and, in the short term, offer slight advantages over those who have not yet completed their collections Rune, but once you reach the level cap, the whole situation is likely to re-equilibrate. Even the purchase of the samples takes place according to the same philosophy, however, considered that rotation are carried out "discount" prices (both real and virtual), checking often the shop will not have to open your wallet, unless you have no particular hurry .

ALTERNATIVE METHOD

The Land of the Summoners is not the only mode offered by the League of Legends. The menu of the client in fact offer several alternatives, including the most recent map Howling Abyss, which is home to the so-called ARAM games. Their characteristics we have already discussed at length in a special dedicated, and we will not dwell here, limiting ourselves to confirm that the mode represents an excellent diversion to the classic matches, offering much shorter fights and frantic, though a bit of strategy is always necessary to obtain good results. The MOBA instead of recordSelva Demonic is a map that has two teams of three players. With some differences, such as the increased availability of gold and the departure from the level 3, it is a sped up version, and with only two lines to control, the Landa of Summoners, which lends itself to shorter matches (up to half an hour ) and frantic. In the central part of the map there are two altars, with bonuses for those who fail to gain control. Completely different design instead to the Valley of the Crystals, map to five players with structured loop control points arranged around it. In the middle are available, for those who can conquistarseli, buff, while the completion of short missions will lead to bonus for the whole team. Each of these modes has been the subject of a specific study on the part of the developers, and balanced with changes to the shop (in fact some items are exclusive to certain modes) and the general equilibrium. The result, overall, is an offer playful enviable. Although the Land of the Summoners will always remain the point of reference (and, not coincidentally, the only one to host ranked matches), the alternatives have all of the special interest, particularly ARAM (or Howling Abyss), which manages to condense with effectiveness of the final phase of a normal game in a few, frantic minutes.
